It is designed to map human-readable names like 'alice.eth' to machine-readable identifiers such as Ethereum addresses, other cryptocurrency addresses, content hashes, and metadata. ENS also supports reverse resolution, allowing the association of metadata such as canonical names or interface descriptions with Ethereum addresses.
Main features
ENS shares similar goals with DNS, the Internet's Domain Name Service, but differs significantly in architecture due to the capabilities and constraints of the Ethereum blockchain. ENS operates on a system of dot-separated hierarchical names called domains, where the domain owner has full control over subdomains. Top-level domains like '.eth' and '.test' are owned by smart contracts known as registrars, which define rules for subdomain allocation. Users can obtain domain ownership by adhering to these rules and can also import DNS names they already own for use on ENS.
How it works
The hierarchical nature of ENS allows domain owners at any level to configure subdomains for themselves or others. For example, if Alice owns 'alice.eth', she can create 'pay.alice.eth' and configure it as desired. ENS is deployed on the Ethereum main network and several test networks. Libraries like the ensjs Javascript library or end-user applications automatically detect the network being interacted with and use the ENS deployment on that network.
